The AMA has decided that my body is a disease in and of itself. They did this so insurance companies and medicare/medicaid will pay for dangerous, ineffective weight-loss treatments. The war on obesity has never been about health — it’s about profit-driven prejudice and profit driven prejudice only!!!
I think we have to get away from the health argument. The AMA’s move isn’t about health — it’s about inciting prejudice to gain profit in the name of health. The people who are willing to have their stomach mutilated or take dangerous diet pills are not doing that for health, though they may have completely convinced themselves that is what it’s about. They are doing it because they want the prejudice and stigma to stop; they want to be treated like people. I just don’t think we’ll ever beat this thing by making the health argument — because that’s not what it’s really about anyway. It’s about profit-driven prejudice — you’ll find that behind all of it!
